5 Star Super Luxury Hotel

Exclusive member since: 2020

Location: Florence in Italy

It's rare, especially in a city as magnetic as Florence, that a hotel is a destination unto itself. Yet combining Renaissance splendor with contemporary luxury, this former medieval monastery captures the imagination.

Nestled in the green hills of Fiesole, Belmond Villa San Michele echoes Florence as a whole. Combining the artistic flair of the 14th century with the ethereal beauty of the region, the hotel is as inspiring as the largest cathedrals and galleries in the city. Our façade, attributed to Michelangelo, is surrounded by lush forests and terraced gardens. From here, visitors enjoy an unmatched panorama over Florence and the Chianti hills beyond.

It's no wonder then that the Hollywood elite and British royalty have flocked to us. Julia Roberts, Vivienne Westwood, The Prince of Wales and John F. Kennedy are among our illustrious former guests. Indeed, Fiesole itself has historically attracted the richest and brightest Florentines. The Medicis built their villas here, and the Renaissance artist and Dominican friar Fra Angelico took his vows among these hills. In 1506, Leonardo da Vinci first demonstrated his flying machine from Montececeri Park, a short drive from our front door.

It was around this time that a community of Franciscan monks laid the foundations for what would later become Belmond Villa San Michele. Today, within its maze of rooms and hallways, vaulted ceilings and worn terracotta floors are among its charming original features. The hotel's 45 rooms and suites, including the private 3-bedroom Limonaia Villa, have a serene feel with antique furniture and antique paintings. However, the villa's former monastic residents may have been surprised to see our Carrara marble bathrooms and modern luxuries.

Step outside and relax in our Italian gardens, stained with the scent of orange blossom and rose. One of our expert gardeners will show you around. Check out our 300-year-old wisteria that, when spring arrives, covers our purple grass facade. Take a dip in our pool perched on the hillside or take in stunning views of the Arno Valley.

If you want to get creative, Belmond Villa San Michele offers a variety of activities. Unleash your inner chef at our world-renowned cooking school with Executive Chef Alessandro Cozzolino. Alternatively, shake things up in our head bartender's cocktail masterclass.

The elegant and rustic La Loggia restaurant inspires the eye and the palate. Sample seasonal Tuscan dishes at sunset. Watch the horizon transform from a tapestry of domes and turrets into a smooth sea, dotted with twinkling lights. Few restaurants and indeed few destinations in the world can match this for romantic happiness.
